The BioSynthetic Systems exhibition project was developed in a creative partnership between the Centre for Regenerative Medicine, the QUT Interactive Visual Design discipline, and the Creative Exchange Institute’s Science Art Lab at the University of Tasmania.

The exhibition – subtitled Prototypes for Immortality: Towards A Distributed and Evolving Self – engages speculatively with the concept of immortality through technological intervention. Drawing on expertise from the Centre of Regenerative Medicine, this project incorporates tissue engineering techniques and new approaches to additive bio-manufacturing – the exploitation of 3D printing technologies in the development of biological products – to develop a series of provocative artworks that highlight the potentials of 21st century biomedical sciences and the agency and transformative capacity of living biomaterials.

By presenting an assemblage of artworks and creative prototypes, alongside technologies developed and/or applied by the Centre of Regenerative Medicine, the exhibition aims to encourage active dialogue. It invites viewers to consider some of the creative applications of the Centre’s research and ponder the possibilities, and philosophical implications, of living engineered systems and mergers of artificial life and biotechnology.

Floor Talk

The exhibition includes a 30 minute floor talk by project collaborators that provide insight into the development process including technological, ethical and logistical challenges, as well as concept and project design.

BioSynthetic Systems is showing in conjunction with the Critical Connections symposium.
